More and more people working or living inside a building are demanding broadband Internet access. To meet the rapidly growing demand of building-centric MTU market, most service providers begin to deploy fiber to the building (FTTB) or fiber to the curb (FTTC).

There are different approaches for building networks on top of FTTB/FTTC. One way is using SDH add-drop multiplexer; however, with new advances in Ethernet technology, more and more service providers have begun to deploy Gigabit Ethernet switches in the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).
